You can also choose from 15 different color panel options so that it can match your decor and will look beautiful in your home.

This means you can put anything you like on there so if one of the 15 different colors isn’t quite right then you can put your own stamp on the unit.

What does the SmartSensor do?

Incorporated into the Alen Breathesmart purifier is a SmartSensor which will automatically detect changes in your air quality and adjust its purification accordingly.  This means that it will only operate at maximum capacity when it absolutely needs to, which will not only prolong the life of the filter but will conserve energy usage as well.

With its WhisperMax technology, this purifier is super quiet so you won’t even notice that it’s on.  It’s designed to produce only low-frequency noise which means it won’t annoy your pets either like some other purifiers, which can emit high-frequency sounds.

The control panel has 6 buttons and indicators as follows:

  • Ionizer button – to turn the ionizer on and off.
  • Filter life indicator light – this will turn red when the filter needs changing.
  • Timer – to set your unit to turn on or off at a given time.
  • Power/Sleep Mode & Air quality feedback light – this lets you know at what speed the unit is currently working.
  • 4-speed fan button – for manual fan adjustment.
  • Automatic mode button – use this for turning on/off automatic mode.

The unit also has a handle so that you can move it from room to room easily if needed which should not be too much of a job as the unit isn’t too heavy or bulky, measuring 26.75 inches x 17.75 inches x 10 inches and weighing 26 pounds.

It comes with a lifetime warranty so you can rest assured that you’ll be enjoying many years of clean, fresh air in your home.

This unit is also Energy Star Certified and only uses a maximum of 105 watts on the highest speed.

How does the SmartSensor Technology work?

When you run the Breathesmart on auto mode, the SmartSensor immediately goes to work for you, constantly evaluating the air quality in your room. It measures air pollutants and adjusts the flow accordingly.

The control panel allows you to see exactly how your unit is performing.  There’s a special color-changing sensor in the middle of the panel.  When the light is blue the unit is maintaining pure air at a low energy use.

When the sensor detects increased air pollutants, the light will turn orange and the air purification will increase. If there is a significant increase in air pollutants, the light will turn red and the unit will immediately switch to turbo mode to quickly clean the air.  Once the air is cleaned the light will again return to blue and the unit will run on its lowest setting.

With this clever technology, you don’t need to worry about constantly checking your air quality and adjusting the settings on the purifier because it does all the work for you.

What are the 4 choices of filter available for this machine?

All filters available for the Breathesmart will remove dust and allergens from the air but each one has unique properties suited to your particular needs.  When you purchase the Alen Breathesmart purifier it comes with the standard HEPA-Pure filter.

Here is a rundown on what each filter will do:

  1. HEPA-Pure – this is the standard filter which is designed to remove air particles like dust, and allergens such as pet dander, pollen and mold spores.
  1. HEPA-Silver – designed as an all-around solution to remove germs, mold and asthma causing particles and allergens.
  1. HEPA-FreshPlus – a chemical filter which will remove smoke, VOCs and other heavy chemicals. This would be great for when you’ve just had your house painted or sprayed for pests.
  1. HEPA-OdorCell – this filter incorporates odor neutralizing technology to break down pet and diaper odors as well as tobacco smoke particles at a molecular level. This ensures that you’re breathing healthy, pure and odorless air in your home.

The filters are available to purchase separately so you may choose to have more than one filter for your unit depending on what you need for your home.

How does the air filtration work?

With any of the 4 available filters, the unit will draw in the polluted air which will pass through a washable pre-filter first.  This will capture large particles which helps to extend the life of the HEPA filter.

When the air passes through the second layer, which is the HEPA filter, all particles such as dust, pet dander, pollen, mold spores and other pollutants are trapped.

The HEPA-Odorcell filter has a third layer, where the patented Molecular Conversion Powder goes to work to destroy odors at a molecular level.  The result is fresh, odorless, pure air being released back into your home.

It’s recommended that the pre-filter be lightly vacuumed or rinsed as soon as it develops a layer of dust.  Make sure you let the filter dry completely before putting it back into the purifier.

Do not wash or vacuum the white HEPA material as it will damage the fibers thus rendering the filter ineffective.

How does the WhisperMax Technology work?

The Breathesmart is designed to work efficiently, processing large amounts of air for purification, but quietly so it won’t disturb you or your family while it’s working away in the background.  The WhisperMax technology uses ‘pink noise’ which studies have shown, is more conducive to a peaceful night’s sleep compared to ‘white’ noise which produces an irritating high-frequency sound.

This ensures that you can leave your unit running day and night without worrying about being disturbed by any noticeable operating noise.

How often do you need to change the filter?

This really depends on how much pollutants you have in the air and how hard the purifier has to work to remove those pollutants.  The SmartSensor will let you know when to change the filter.  Customers who have used this unit for some time said that they needed to change their filter about every 8-9 months with consistent use.

Is it easy to change the filter?

It’s very easy to change the filter in this unit.  All you need to do is remove the front cover, pull out the old filter and then pop the new filter in.  It’s a good idea to either do this outside or have a trash bag handy as the used filter will be covered in dust and other particles.

How do you reset the SmartSensor after you’ve changed the filter?

Just hold down the filter life button for 5 seconds while the unit is on and the light should reset to green again.

Will this purifier remove cigarette smoke?

Yes! Using the correct filter (HEPA-Odorcell) this purifier is designed to remove cigarette and cigar smoke quickly and efficiently leaving the air in your room smelling fresh and clean.  In fact, if the Breathesmart detects smoke in the air, it will immediately switch to turbo mode to remove the smoke particles as quickly as possible. This is not only great for removing smoke odors but could reduce the chance of people breathing in second-hand smoke – if the smoke isn’t in the air it can’t be breathed in!

Is the Alen Breathesmart ozone friendly?

Although all electrical appliances will emit some ozone, the Alen Breathesmart has very little ozone emission.  It has been approved by the California Air Resources Board as being ozone safe.

Does this unit have an Ionizer?

The Breathesmart does have an ionizer which can be turned on or off as needed.  When the ionizer is turned on it will create electrons which are released into the air.  The electrons then attach themselves to air molecules to form ions.

These ions are negatively charged and will attract dust, pollen, cigarette smoke and pet dander to form larger particles. These particles are then sucked into the air purifier’s filter thus safely removing them from the air in your home.

What are customers saying about this purifier?

87% of customers gave the unit a positive review with 4-5 stars.

Amazon.com - April 2017

A lot of people are very happy with the effectiveness of this air purifier and how well it cleans the air.  One customer even said that it definitely reduced the amount of dust in the air meaning that she now only needs to sweep and dust weekly rather than daily.

Owners seem very impressed with how the BreatheSmart removes odors such as cooking smells, pet odors and cigarette smoke, and there are many positive comments about how fast the air purifier can clean the air, including stale air in a cellar or basement room.

Our research indicates that the Alen purifier does a good job in enclosed rooms and apartments up to 1200 square feet, which is great as it confirms the official rating of this machine. We also found reports that it can easily remove grass pollen from the air in the room which is good news for those people who have problems with allergies.

Of course, there are a small number of cases where the reviewers complain that the unit does not work for them, but it should be noted this could be for a variety of reasons and not necessarily a problem with the purifier itself. What is comforting to see though is that the Alen customer care team are actively responding to some of these negative reviews and offering advice. They also mention taking advantage of the lifetime warranty where there have been mechanical issues, which is great to hear.

Handy Hint: For those of you who want to run this in your bedroom whilst you sleep, we came across a little hint that you might easily miss – to turn the lights off on the unit at night, press the power button just once. The unit will continue to run but there will be no distracting glow to keep you awake.
